The Cohiba Cigars have a rather fascinating history. Fidel Castro had a bodyguard called Bienvenido Perez. Mr. Perez was a frequent cigar smoker and his boss noticed that the cigars he smoked were very aromatic and this caught his attention. Castro interested to know about the cigars inquired from Perez about them who then explained that the cigars were hand-rolled by a friend and given to him as a gift. Eduardo Rivera was the man who had rolled the cigars that Perez often smoked; he was cigar roller working at a factory in Havana called the La Corona. He was approached by Castro who wanted him to roll cigars for him and eventually with an addition of five other rollers; they were all placed at the El Laguito that was initially a diplomatic mansion in the suburbs of Havana. The factory later turned out to be the only cigar factory that had only women cigar rollers also known as torcedoras.
These hand-rolled cigars were set aside for Castro and other prominent Cuban officials. Castro’s favorite cigars were long and thin. During the 1982 World Cup he decided to release his cigars as a first-class cigar brand to the public and the Cohiba Marque launched within that time came in three sizes, which were the Corona Especial, the Panetela and the Lancero. He further introduced three more sizes in 1989, which were the Exquisito, the Robusto and the Explendido. The six sizes are collectively known as the classic line, Linea Clasica.
In 1992 the Linea 1492 line was launched in honor of Christopher Columbus. It has a collection of six sizes, each named after a century since Columbus’ discovery. The six are Siglo I, II, III, IV, V, and VI. Today there is a wide collection of the Cohiba Cigars, each of which is pure pleasure. Some of the most demanded of the Cohiba cigars are the Cohiba Extra (XV), Cohiba Puro, Cohiba Robusto, Cohiba Red Dot among others.
Cohiba ExtraThe Cohiba XV, which stands for Extra Vigoros, was blended by Daniel Nunez. It is a full- bodied cigar and has a sun-grown Sumatra Leaf wrapper from Ecuador. Each leaf is aged for a period of three years and the flavors are enhanced through an extra aging process done in crates of cedar. The wrapper has a rich dark color. The draw is easy although compared to other Cohiba cigars it is quite strong, the flavors are excellent and you can taste a hint of coffee and dark chocolate. This superbly crafted, finely blended cigar is produced in limited quantities
Cohiba PuroThe Puro also made by Daniel Nunez was produced in the 90’s. It is a full-bodied purely Dominian cigar and has a Dominican natural wrapper. These cigars are usually aged in charcoal wooden barrels to enhance their natural flavors, which are an infusion of oak flavor, spices including pepper with a hint of coffee, cedar, and dry woods. Individuals who have had the pleasure of smoking the Puro noted that there was some harshness however its flavors scored a very high percentage among the users and it is evident that the Puro is a great cigar.
Cohiba Red DotMade in the Dominican Republic, the Red Dot has aged Dominican fuller tobaccos with African Cameroon Wrappers that have a sweet aroma. They are full-bodied with medium flavors. It has exquisite flavors of coffee and cream, citrus and a slight hint of pepper and spices. The smoke is not overpowering instead its mild and very aromatic. These delightful cigars are definitely worth a try.
Cohiba RobustoThe Robusto is originally Cuban and has a glossy slightly oily Cuban wrapper. It is fresh and has complex flavors including spices, coffee, and pepper with cedar and woody undertones. It has an easy draw and an amazing zesty feeling in the mouth. This exceptional cigar is mild with a pleasant creamy flavor. The Robusto will definitely give you a guarantee for your money.
